This intensive and hands-on workshop is designed to help photographers of all levels master the art of studio lighting. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a photographic novice, this workshop has something for everyone, focusing on lighting theory, equipment usage, creative problem-solving, and industry insights.

From setting up your studio to crafting the perfect shot. We will guide you through every step of the process, providing you with the knowledge, techniques, and confidence you need to succeed in the competitive world of studio photography.

In this class, you’ll learn studio lighting and light-shaping tools from the ground up. We’ll dissect the lighting in several successful images and identify not only HOW to light a subject properly but also WHY.

You’ll cover the basics of lighting, the various styles of lighting, and photo lighting equipment and combine them to create memorable images.

You’ll have ample time to work on the studio lighting techniques being taught.

Here are just a few of the important topics we’ll tackle in this workshop:

  • Light Quality, Light Quantity, Light Direction
  • Using hot lights to understand the quality, direction, brightness and colour of light.
  • Understanding Mono lights vs. Generator lights (Strobes)
  • Working with battery-powered lights (Strobes)
  • Introduction to Speedlights/Flash
  • Understanding the importance of each unique light as well as the light-shaping tool and how they can best be utilized. This implies learning to make the appropriate choice of light shapers and diffusers.
  • Using a light meter for comprehensive understanding and control of light to manage correct and predictable exposure and contrast dynamics.
  • Defining facial features with light and shadow.
  • Gain confidence in your ability to bring out the best in your client/subject.
  • Soft and hard lighting
  • Backgrounds and props for studio lighting.
  • Lighting equipment and equipment setup.
  • Studio safety.
  • Light modifiers, including umbrellas, softboxes, reflectors, gobos, flags, snoots, barn doors, and much more.

You will receive a certificate of completion the course on Studio lighting.

SCHEDULE:

Session 1 – September 05, 2024 – 3 HOURS – 6:30 to 9:30pm – Introduction and demonstration on Colour, Direction, Specular, diffused, Intensity/Brightness of light. Various types of lighting gear, including a variety of light shapers. Participants will have the opportunity to shoot and retain all images for their reference.

Session 2 – September 07, 2024 10:00 am to 2:00 pm– 4 HOURS – Start with the fundamentals of portraiture and explore a variety of lighting patterns. Why choosing a particular pattern is important, depending on the subject, and how it changes the subject’s personality. Utilize constant specular lights and explore the film noir genre. Why on occasion, one light source may be enough and why on occasion we need much more than just one light source (contrast management).

Participants will have the opportunity to shoot and retain all images for their reference.

Session 3 – 3 HOURS September 08, 2024 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm– Participants get free use of studio and lighting gear to explore and practice skills and techniques learned in the previous session. Participants may bring in their own subjects or request access to a model. Supervision and guidance will be available.

Session 4 – 3 HOURS September 14, 2024 11:00 am to 2:00 pm– Introduction to Fashion and Glamour with professional models. We will explore both fashion and glamour from a catalogue perspective and then a lifestyle point of view.

Participants will have the opportunity to shoot and retain all images for their reference.

Session 5 – 3 HOURS September 15, 2024 11:00 am to 2:00 pm – Product and still life photography with constant lights and strobes. Particular stress on highly reflective and transparent subject.

Session 6 – 3 HOURS September 21, 2024 11:00 am to 3:00 pm – Participants get use of studio to practice things learned in the previous sessions. Q & A. Advice and guidance on next steps towards success as a quality professional photographer

What Will You Learn?

  • This is a 20-hour course that includes, but is not limited to:
  • • Photographing a professional model in several genres with varying lighting setups
  • (you will be amazed at the high quality results controlled lighting offers).
  • • Setting up your camera in manual mode for perfect studio results
  • (no manual mode experience required).
  • • Understanding core light theory (hard vs soft light).
  • • Controlling "falloff" as a method of lighting single persons, groups, and affecting the light in your background all at the same time.
  • • Making the right decision about the focal length of the lens for the shot.
  • • Understanding the light modifiers you can use to design the specific lighting for a shot, and then getting hands-on setup experience.
  • • Controlling the strobes (lights) - all about power, metering, controlling exposure
  • • Demonstration of a tethered workflow to allow real-time image capture on a computer for greater preview ability when shooting live.
  • • How to use a light meter for precise light measurement of the subject.
  • • Use of umbrellas, strip boxes, octaboxes, beauty dishes and more.
  • • Ongoing discussion, tips, and techniques far beyond those mentioned here
  • • Prior to the event, you will be provided with preparation notes to read in advance
  • • 2-3 weeks following the event, you will receive extra information about retouching, a buying guide and a gallery featuring images created during the workshop event
  • • The workshop will also explore shooting with strobes mixing constant (tungsten) light to perfectly balance and control lighting with mixed lighting

Requirements

  • You will need:
  • • a DSLR or mirrorless camera with interchangeable lens capability and a hot shoe on top of the camera (for the transmitter which we will provide)
  • • at least one lens between 50mm and 100mm is ideal
  • • other focal lengths greater than 100mm can be useful as well
  • • Tripod
  • • FULLY charged batteries!
  • • a memory card (second for backup is recommended if one should fail)
  • • NO flash gear is needed - we provide all of the lighting equipment

Audience

  • If you've ever been curious about how the professionals (and aspiring professionals) truly light their subjects, then this workshop is for you. You'll learn the skills and the techniques to do this all on your own, with advice on which gear to use and why. No previous lighting experience is required, though a good understanding of your camera controls is important.
